Chris Mitchell – Artistic Director, Concert Band

Chris Mitchell is a conductor, educator and performer. He studied Tuba at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree and Postgraduate Masters Degree in Performance, studying with Tony Swainson and guest Professor, Patrick Sheridan.

In September 2022, Chris took on the role of Brass Instructor with South Lanarkshire Council having worked for West Dunbartonshire for the previous 17 years. During his time at WDC, Chris conducted the authority band, leading to success at national and regional festivals including performances with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In addition to his teaching work, Chris has directed the University of Strathclyde’s Concert Band since 2010, leading them on International tours and sell out performances at home and abroad and achieving platinum awards at national festivals.

As a performer, Chris has worked with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, toured nationally with chamber ensembles and recorded with commercial bands.

Chris has a long association with WSSO ensembles having worked as lower brass tutor for the Concert Band since 2005. In 2015, he was appointed Artistic Director of the newly launched WSSO Training Band. Highlights over the years include annual the annual Showcase Concert at City Halls and side by side performances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Chris took on the role of Acting Artistic Director of the Concert Band following the retiral of Nigel Boddice MBE and was appointed Artistic Director in September 2023.
