The West String Orchestra is aimed at Primary 7 – Secondary 3 pupils playing at approximately Grade 3+ level and was launched along with the Training Band in spring 2015 with the aim of widening access and providing further opportunities for young musicians.
The ensemble is directed by David O’Connell and tutoring staff are experienced, professional performers and teachers. The ensemble meets several times during the year and activities include a residential course at Gartmore House and a large-scale concert performance in Glasgow.
As well as music training and rehearsals, the team at Gartmore provide a programme of team-building games and social activities. In 2016 this included a Bhangra dancing session with Anuj Choudhary, a ceilidh, barbeque and bonfire.
Additional activities in 2016 included a Taster Day event, attendance as special guests at an RSNO Concert and a Side by Side day with performers from the RSNO and a recording session.
