AUDITION ARRANGEMENTS – SEASON 2023
Senior Ensemble Applicants (Concert Band & Symphony Orchestra)
Audition Requirements:
Auditions take place during November. You will be required to play a single piece (approximately 3 – 5 minutes) and undertake a simple sight-reading test. All auditions are unaccompanied. In choosing your music, please select something that best demonstrates your ability.
Percussionists should prepare one piece on xylophone and a 2nd piece on either snare drum or timpani. Candidates will be asked to play a short sight-reading test on the instrument of their choice.
Audition Preparation
Please don’t worry if this is your 1st audition. Our audition panel members are all WSSO tutors and experienced teachers who are there to help and guide you through the audition process. We want everyone to do well and the audition is simply an opportunity to allow us to hear you play and make sure you are ready to cope with the level of music being performed.
There is lots of information online about how to prepare for an audition but the following points will help;
- Ask your instrumental teacher to help you prepare
- Choose something that you can play well
- Practise, practise, practise! Make sure you are well prepared and you’ll cope better with any nerves on the day
- Play your piece to family members and friends to get used to performing in front of people
- Record yourself playing on your smartphone and play it back
- Practise sight-reading examples, taking note of key and time signatures and tempo markings before you begin
